The Russian-Norwegian-Hungarian piano trio brings together three soloists with strong individuality and a distinctive sense of style. Two weighty works are at the heart of their program: Brahms' last piano trio in C minor, composed in the summer of 1886 on the shores of Lake Thun, alternates between fatefully serious and sweet tones. In contrast, Dmitri Shostakovich's harrowing E minor Trio, which the composer dedicated in 1944 to the memory of his friend Ivan Sollertinsky, who died young, is filled with sadness and tragedy. The contrast to the bright colors of Benjamin Britten and Karol Szymanowski is all the greater.
