While Maurice Ravel spent his entire life in France, his former fellow Parisian student, George Enescu, who came from the Moldavian region, commuted back and forth between France and Romania throughout his life. The strong musical connection between Western and Eastern Europe is also reflected in the biographical roots and concert programs of the Romanian-French violinist Sarah Nemtanu, who was appointed concertmaster of the Orchestre National de France at the age of just 21. With her sensitive chamber music partner Romain Descharmes, she celebrates both the French refinement of sound, enriched with exotic colors, but also revels in the Romanian folk tone with which Enescu inspired his famous third violin sonata, for example. The music of Béla Bartók adds a further, equally individual take on folk music.
