Under the tongue-in-cheek and fitting name The Retired Hobos, pianist, singer and guitarist Henning Pertiet and drummer Ralf Jackowski present an intense, earthy blues & boogie woogie program. Deeply rooted in tradition, but anything but dusty - lively, direct and timelessly grooving.

Henning Pertiet - piano, vocals, guitar

Henning Pertiet has been living the blues for almost four decades: on the piano, with the guitar and with his voice. Born in Hamburg and now at home near Verden (Aller), he belongs to the second generation of European blues and boogie-woogie pianists and is stylistically firmly rooted in the tradition of the great American role models of the 1920s to 1940s. Or, as Axel Zwingenberger aptly puts it:

"Henning is one of the leading pianists of the genre worldwide and a figurehead of Germany in blues piano."

Ralf Jackowski - drums

With Ralf Jackowski, Pertiet has a drummer at his side who has literally been washed in all kinds of musical waters. Studied, stylistically knowledgeable and in love with grooves, he moves confidently between jazz, rock, pop and blues & boogie woogie - always in the service of the music, always with just the right drive.

The Retired Hobos - Blues with history

The name says it all: a tongue-in-cheek nod to the roots of the blues - the music of wanderers, workers and storytellers. The focus is on the classic blues and boogie woogie that became the pop music of an entire generation in the USA between 1935 and 1945. Pioneers such as Pete Johnson, Albert Ammons and Meade "Lux" Lewis set standards that still resonate today.

While this music only became more widespread in Europe decades later, musicians like Henning Pertiet are continuing this tradition today with historical knowledge, their own style and a palpable joy of playing.

A concert with rarity value

The audience can look forward to an authentic, powerful and historically grounded blues experience - far removed from clichés, fashions and musical idleness. A duo that does not quote the blues, but lives it. The two musicians have been working closely together since around 2000, playing hundreds of concerts throughout Germany. Their interplay is based on experience, trust and a shared love of traditional blues.
