Hermon Mehari may have been born in Jefferson City and grew up in the USA. But the trumpeter's roots are in Eritrea and come through again and again in his music. Mehari uses the diverse rhythms, harmonies and melodies that come from his parents' homeland and combines them very plausibly with the sound language from the motherland of jazz. On albums like Asmara, however, the reflection on his origins is not purely musical. His compositions deal with various aspects of Eritrea's rich culture.
This Hermon Mehari is a consummate storyteller. So much resonates in his addictive tone, so much emotion and passion, so much melancholy, so much pride, so much history.
Hermon Mehari has already received several awards for his playing style and virtuosity: in 2008 he won the National Trumpet Competition and in 2015 he was the winner of the Carmine Caruso International Trumpet Competition.
