Nepal - Bhutan - Ladakh - Tibet
Lecture by Pascal Violo
For several years, Pascal Violo has repeatedly immersed himself in the mystical world of the Himalayas. In his new live reportage, he tells the most exciting stories from eight adventurous journeys through Nepal, Bhutan, Ladakh and Tibet. Over snowy passes, up icy mountains and through remote villages, but above all to the people of this unique region.
The travel journalist hikes to the base camp of Mount Everest in Nepal, climbs a 6,000-meter peak in Ladakh near the Tibetan border and crosses the world's highest drivable pass. During a winter expedition, he explores the frozen Zanskar River at minus 30 degrees. Finally, Violo drinks butter tea with nomads in their yurts and is initiated into the mysticism of monastic life by a monk.
Impressed by the warmth of the inhabitants, the travel photographer sets off in search of the soul of this region and explores the roads and paths of Ladakh in all directions on an old Indian motorcycle, visiting ancient monasteries, chanting mantras with monks and capturing the magical light in his pictures. After Pascal Violo embarks on a search for happiness in the last Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, capturing the region's most colorful mask dances in impressive film sequences, he experiences a touching meeting with the Dalai Lama in Ladakh.
In Tibet, Pascal Violo and numerous pilgrims circle Mount Kailash, the source of the four largest rivers in South Asia and the holiest mountain for four religions, and celebrates the colorful Saga Dawa festival - the Buddha's birthday - with thousands of Tibetans at the foot of the mountain. On his hikes over high mountains and through lonely valleys, the photographer repeatedly encounters this very special mysticism that can be found in the mountain regions of the Himalayas.
