Art and history of the Sámi

The work, which was exhibited at documenta 14 in 2017 and made Britta Marakatt-Labba instantly famous, measures 24 meters: embroidered in linen, it unfolds a panorama of Sámi history and tradition in Northern Europe. "Historjá" is a poetic and poignant portrait of the artist. Her art describes Sámi culture then and now. Through a mixture of powerful images of nature and archive footage, the film also provides an insight into the history of the Sámi and describes how climate change is threatening their livelihood.
