When the adult - and already famous - artist Frida Kahlo finds her old diary, she remembers her childhood: the shopping at the market, her dream of becoming a doctor, but also the teasing in the schoolyard and the long months in the sickroom. Suffering from polio, Frida spends a lot of time alone and creates an imaginary friend who gives her strength to fight against death - which is told in poetic images on the screen. With the help of her father, a photographer, Frida also finds her way into painting during this time, initially to keep herself busy, but also to capture the many images in her head and of herself.
She helps him to colorize black and white photographs and discovers that the world is much more beautiful in colour. Later, she adds flowers and colorful decorations to the photographed reality - just as she paints her reflection in ever new variations and develops her unique art form.
