Holly Humberstone's long-awaited debut album "Paint My Bedroom Black" was released on October 13, 2023. The opener and title track already shows that it's straight to the point here. Direct, unvarnished lyrics and sharp guitar lines confirm the Englishwoman's uncompromising nature and at the same time show the development she has undergone over the past two years. The abysses that permeated her acclaimed debut EP "The Walls Are Way Too Thin" are clearly still present in the lyrics and music, but the songwriting and production have gained in depth and quality throughout. The music seems even denser and more finely spun as a result. The dark and otherworldly space that Humberstone creates here and into which she invites her fans can almost be experienced visually, as if the singer's microphone is always linked to a camera on her shoulder. These songs focus her chaotic thoughts and deep feelings like a lens, combining music and content into a compelling unity. So it's no wonder that the Brit has already been nominated for two Ivor Novello Awards, won the BRIT Rising Star last year and cleaned up on the newcomer stage at Glastonbury. If there's one positive to take away from the Covid pandemic, it's the depth of this music, as Humberstone has opened up her inner world when the world was closed. Writing songs, shaping sound and her open energy proved to be a tonic in dark days. It gave her strength to make her sound and songs so strong too. Striking themes such as lost love, family cohesion and the deep-seated fears of youth intertwine with an organic sound production held together by that soaring voice. Holly Humberstone recently proved that this can also be an overwhelming experience live at the Reeperbahn Festival and at a fine and very intimate performance in Berlin. She has now confirmed that she will be coming to us again next February.
