by Carlos Ruiz Zafón
The wind blows shadows from the past into the present. Zafón's novel follows the young Daniel from 1945 to 1966 through his youth and early adulthood in Barcelona. Unpunished misdeeds from the past are combined with crimes from the time of the Spanish Civil War and the Franco dictatorship. Shadows that accompany the protagonists.
Daniel Sempere is ten years old when he wakes up screaming one night. The son of a bookseller, he can no longer remember the face of his dead mother. His father then takes him to the mysterious "Cemetery of Forgotten Books". The boy is allowed to choose a book in the second-hand bookshop and he decides on "The Shadow of the Wind" by the completely unknown author Julian Carax. It will take him many years to decipher Carax's story. In the process, he immerses himself in the dark times of the Franco era and in a ghostly Barcelona of the 1950s.
