Copacabana was the musical center of Rio de Janeiro in the 1950s and early 1960s. Night after night, singers such as Elizeth Cardoso, Dolores Duran, Angela Maria, and later Elza Soares performed in legendary “boites” like the Vogue or the Little Club, and later in the bars of Beco das Garrafas and the Bottles Bar. Here, the soulful samba-canção—inspired by jazz and Hispanic American bolero—evolved into a new musical language that ultimately gave rise to bossa nova and samba-jazz, or “sambalanço.”

Musicians such as Johnny Alf, Luiz Eça (who studied in Vienna under Friedrich Gulda), Dom Salvador, Edison Machado, and the Tamba Trio created a modern Brazilian jazz and introduced genuinely unique musical styles to the international jazz scene. By the mid-1960s, numerous Brazilian jazz trios were active, such as the Rio65 Trio, the Milton Banana Trio, and the Trio 3D, as well as the Sambrasa Trio, which featured Hermeto Pascoal and Airto Moreira. With the rise of pop and rock, however, this extraordinary musical legacy increasingly fell into obscurity.

This concert revives the atmosphere of Copacabana from those years and combines the music of the great divas with the innovative jazz trios of the time.

About the quartet:
Eutália de Carvalho, from Minas Gerais, has lived in Berlin for many years and performs with the “Oloyé Trio,” among other groups.
Tom Maciel is a Brazilian pianist who studied in Lisbon, has since moved to Berlin, and enriches the jazz scene there.
Thiago Duarte has collaborated with Egberto Gismonti, among others, and is one of the most sought-after Brazilian bassists on the Berlin scene.
Axel Filip is from Argentina, studied at the Jazz-Institut Berlin, and is active in numerous jazz projects.
