Hutkonzert : Jonathan Stephen Simons Trio aus Südafrika

A trio from South Africa is stopping by the “Hemelinger Karibik”! Last year we hosted Kaurna Cronin from Australia, and her fellow musicians have now made this collaboration happen—so the Jonathan Stephen Simons Trio is playing in Bremen on their first European tour!

And best of all, admission is free!
That means: Everyone is welcome, and those who can are encouraged to drop a bill into the hat for the concerts. Great.

Vibes from South Africa at studioeins! The Jonathan Stephen Simons Trio finished their first album together this winter and is now presenting it live in Berlin this summer—on their first tour through Europe!

Influenced by artists like Ben Howard, Hozier, and the Kings of Convenience, Jonathan Simons has developed his own indie-folk sound, which he performs as a trio alongside his longtime bandmates Ray Adam Morgan on drums and Stephen de Souza on bass. While the three have collaborated frequently with Hamburg-based musician Lemony Rug recently, their joint song “Catching Sunlight” has just been released.

Their debut album, “Time Flows Like Water,” is the result of two years of work, in which the three friends explore themes of failure and letting go as well as the growth that comes from them. Above all, however, the twelve tracks are about what defines us as human beings: love.

“Love opens you up,” the lyrics in the song “Warning of Weakness” state, among other things, but it also resonates indirectly in many other parts of Johnathan Stephen Simons’ lyrics, as the songs deal with relationships within a social fabric as well as the love for our surroundings that shapes us all. While Simons hails from the Cape Town area, Ray Adam Morgan and Stephen de Souza are from Durban and Johannesburg—all three met while making music in the Cape Town scene. Now they’re on their first European tour!
