April 5, 2024 marks the thirtieth anniversary of KURT COBAIN 's death. For several decades, the fact that the NIRVANA singer was an outspoken feminist was largely of no particular interest to the German media. In fact, the music and actions of the band Nirvana were feminist in nature. Fortunately, these times have changed and a new perspective on the queer side of Kurt Cobain can now also be considered in this country.

The great new book bears witness to this: "Nirvana. 100 pages" (Reclam) by ISABELLA CALDART. (RELEASE: 20.03.24). In addition to the classic bio, there are three essays in which the author discusses Cobain's queer side, his relationship to the media and "Nirvana & politics".
We are delighted that Isabella Caldart (freelance journalist for taz, Missy Magazine, nd, 54books and Deutschlandfunk Kultur, among others) will be reading from it to kick off our 22nd "I need a genius" edition!

And our MUSIC program is also full of Nevertheless and Nature moments:
IBADET RAMADANI plays timeless, calm and, in the best sense, unformatted (pop) music. Ten years after the end of her indie pop band SUPER700, Ibadet Ramadani took her guitar into the forest and tried to find out whether music could once again thrive on the fertile soil of her life - and if so, what kind. And suddenly she was surrounded by songs. Carefully orchestrated songs that deal with farewells, love, hope and pain. Musically, producer MARTIN GALLOP has wrapped these stories full of small and large wonders in an earth-colored cloak woven from delicate Americana threads. Depending on the incidence of light, sometimes folk, sometimes country, strings, Hammond and horns adorn the work, a bottleneck flits along the guitar neck. Above all, Ibadet Ramadani's wonderfully clear and soothing vocals. The press was enthusiastic when the self-titled album was released in winter 2023. It was "Album of the Week" on radio eins, for example. And the Frankfurter Rundschau, for example, highlighted the "remarkable lyrical quality" of the lyrics.
At "Ich brauche eine Genie", Ibadet Ramadani will perform songs from the album together with Martin Gallop.

No less somnambulistic, enraptured - and celebrated by the press & audience: the recently released new work "In anderem Licht" by BARBARA MORGENSTERN. The chamber music double album tells of the impending climate catastrophe, the hope for social transformation processes and a possible liberation from the state of general paralysis. Barbara Morgenstern has been one of Germany's most independent musicians for over 20 years. From the Berlin living room scene of the 90s to the award-winning theater productions with Rimini Protokoll in recent years, she always follows her inner voice in her unbroken belief in the magic of music: John Cale, Björk, Mark Hollis, Hans Unstern or Robert Wyatt come to mind as possible soul mates when listening: a certain oddness, paired with great virtuosity and a penchant for a certain minimalism, which can always be big and epic. For the moment. Nevertheless, the music!

Barbara Morgenstern will perform at "Ich brauche eine Genie" together with "Morningstar" band member SEBASTIAN VOGEL on drums.

Nevermind THE DOCTORELLA! 2024 is also the year in which the new THE DOCTORELLA album "Mondscheinpsychose, Bordsteinrose" will be released. It promises nothing less than to reinvent grunge for the year 2024: with influences from trap rap, noise & discourse rock and electronica. During "Ich brauche eine Genie", the Doctorellas will present two new songs from the album (in a duo set: vocals, guitar, synth).
KERSTY GRETHER and SANDRA GRETHER: musicians, authors, chaos-tested saloniers, are among the most important voices of pop feminism in this country.
