"Power Nap" - that's a small break in the day, a glide from wakefulness into the unconscious, a drift into a parallel world. Ilgen-Nur's music leads us into the artist's own and peculiar world of thought, her associative lyrics oscillate between diary entries and dream descriptions. Her cool singing voice and flat guitar arrangements merge into a sound that shapes the unmistakable character of her debut album "Power Nap".
It was a long way before Ilgen-Nur was named the new German slacker queen by the press when the album was released. It began in the Swabian province, where Ilgen-Nur grew up in a family with a history of migration. Inspired by the Courtney Love quote "I want every girl in the world to pick up a guitar and start screaming", she asks for an electric guitar for her 16th birthday - and gets it. She dives deep into the indie world and even founds her own fanzine, "The Spilled Juice Zine", in which she interviews artists like Kate Nash who inspire her.
The urge to escape the confines of the provinces led her to Hamburg in her early twenties. There she soon dropped out of university to devote herself entirely to music. Her first releases followed: the EP "No Emotions" and several singles. "Power Nap" was finally released in 2019 - a debut that the German indie scene had clearly been waiting for. The response from the public and the press is overwhelming.
The Berliner Tagesspiegel writes: "Their songs are the most laid-back thing you've heard in the German indie scene recently." Musikexpress says: "Hardly anyone captures the state of mind of this generation on the way to their thirties, let's call them "Z", in such well-turned, yet laconic and above all poetic lines." And Visions describes their album as follows: "Duvet-soft guitar pop with references to shoegaze, noise and a certain surfiness, the best of the 90s up to now and as catchy as a Sunday morning that you can't resist: "Honey and butter on toast"." Kaput magazine refers to the artist as the "luck of the sad loner".
And things are going really well for Ilgen-Nur: she accompanies Tocotronic on their tour, plays with Kele Okereke from Bloc Party, goes on her own headlining tours and plays numerous festival shows.
But Ilgen-Nur remains on the search: she moves to Berlin and spends a lot of time in L.A., where she lives in the legendary Laurel Canyon - the place that was home to folk greats such as Joni Mitchell, the Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash in the 1960s. Ilgen-Nur's artistic journey continues, her sound changing over the years and especially through her time in California, which has deeply inspired her.
At Lieblingsplatte, "Power Nap" will now be performed live - the album that started it all, which defies any template and has become a quiet milestone of German-language indie with its unagitated self-confidence.
