Ilona Haberkamp: Plötzlich Hip(p) (Literaturtage Recklinghausen 2026)
In the organizer's words:
Ilona Haberkamp: “Suddenly Hip(p)” – The Life of Jutta Hipp Between Jazz and Art
Jutta Hipp was a pioneer of jazz—celebrated, groundbreaking, and far ahead of her time. Yet the Leipzig-born pianist was all but forgotten for decades. In her biography *Suddenly Hip(p) *, Ilona Haberkamp traces the extraordinary life of an artist who held her own in a male-dominated music scene and made international jazz history.
After studying art, Jutta Hipp became a defining figure in postwar West German jazz. As “Europe’s First Lady of Jazz,” she made the leap to New York and played with greats such as Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, and Horace Silver. She was the first German and white female jazz pianist to release recordings on the legendary Blue Note Records label—a milestone in her career.
Yet at the height of her success, Hipp unexpectedly withdrew from the music world. She traded the piano for a sewing machine, remained in the U.S., and never returned to Germany.
The event sheds light not only on the fascinating biography of an extraordinary musician but also on the social and cultural-political developments of her time. An exciting rediscovery at the intersection of jazz history, art, and women’s self-determination.
