Shot in 1988, the film is indeed a single intoxicating experience that conjures up the fascination of the sea and captures deep-sea diving in magical images. A calm meditation on the seemingly endless vastness and stillness of the ocean for the majority of the running time, "Intoxicated by the Deep" takes on existentialist traits towards the end.
With this film, former diving instructor Luc Besson fulfilled a long-cherished dream. The plot is inspired by the divers Jacques Mayol and Enzo Majorca, who were competing for diving records in the 1960s. Majorca was the technical advisor for the filming, during which the two main actors, after months of diving training, filmed themselves to a depth of forty meters. The underwater shots were filmed by Luc Besson himself, who directed a diving epic that is a good 160 minutes long in the director's cut. Not so much because of the abundance of events, but rather Besson's attempt to capture his characters' attitude to life and their love for the world of the sea.
