Information about the play

"This is the most unfair thing in the world or in life!"

We all know this feeling very well: something is going really wrong in the world and in life and, in fact, in general. Adults have a court of law in which they are tried. But a fair verdict is not always reached there. And they never hear about what is really going wrong: the injustices of life itself! What's more, you have to stand up, sit down and listen. As is so often the case, adults make the rules. But what would it actually be like if children had their own law and their own... children's court?

Children and young people in Bremen set up their own children's court! Based on their own observations in Bremen's local court, they ask themselves and their audience some important questions: What does justice mean? Who decided that? Who actually made the world so messed up? Are there perhaps demons hiding under the judges' robes? And what would happen if all the adults were gone?

In the Schwankhalle, the children's court tries its own cases: the children bring their perspectives on social (in)justice to the theater stage in a playful, dancing and humorous way. Every detail is important, everything is up for negotiation and at some point a verdict is reached. Oh dear!

Information about the artists

"Das Kindergericht" is a joint project by the Schwankhalle, the Frankfurt performance collective imaginary company and the Bremen association unperform e.V. in cooperation with the Grundschule am Buntentorsteinweg. Since the 2023 autumn vacations, children and young people from Bremen have been using real cases to explore the question of how justice is found and what it actually has to do with our personal sense of justice.

imaginary company came together based on a common question: How can sophisticated political theater for children and young people be realized that takes them seriously and yet remains empathetic? The resulting works do not see themselves as theater only for young audiences, but as theater for everyone. The focus of the award-winning works has always been the direct experience of abstract, complex issues in the form of performative and literary distortions of reality and the joint engagement with the audience of children, young people and adults at eye level.
