How and why do you write a novel, against all odds? What happens when the novel is published? What happens next? Who sells the finished novel, how and to whom in the bookstore?

After the two enjoyable events in June and July, Thomas Steierer, author and cabaret artist who is working on his first novel, will once again be welcoming two illustrious guests to the stage of Heppel & Ettlich on Münchner Freiheit on September 18 as part of the series of events sponsored by the City of Munich's Department of Culture:

Author Markus Ostermair has made it onto the SPIEGEL bestseller list with his debut novel "Der Sandler", in which he takes an intense and exciting literary look at homelessness and the people affected by it, and has received the Tukan Prize of the City of Munich, among other awards.

A few years ago, bookseller Ulrike Kreutzer used her enthusiasm for literature to make a career change from the film industry to the book trade and successfully set up her own bookshop "Colibri" in Dießen am Ammersee - right in front of Corona.

Thomas Steierer talks to author Markus Ostermair about how he came up with the subject of his novel "Der Sandler", about the naturally longer phases of the writing process and finding a publisher, about continuing against all odds, about his experiences after publication, including those as a bestselling author and award winner, the impact of literature and about his current and future projects.

The discussion with Ulrike Kreutzer will also focus on the selection criteria according to which newly published novels make it into bookshops, the entrepreneurial risk for booksellers, what customers particularly value in terms of literature, why and how Ulrike Kreutzer made the career change from the film industry to the book trade and how Ulrike Kreutzer sees the future of the book trade - in times of e-books, Amazon and smartphone ADHD attention spans.

Markus Ostermair will read from his debut novel "Der Sandler" and from his novel project "Sieben Leben" (working title), which is set in a small farming environment.

Thomas Steierer, who was awarded the Großer Scharfrichterbeil for his cabaret program "Der urbane Dorfdepp", will read excerpts from the rough version of his novel IMMER WEITER (working title), which will also form the basis for future stage activities. The tragicomic text deals with questions that come to the fore at the latest after about 40 years of life, at midlife, such as: How have things gone so far, how do you move on, what highlights does life have in store for you in the future, when will the hits come even closer?

Ulrike Kreutzer, Markus Ostermair and Thomas Steierer enter into a dialog with each other, they pass the ball to each other and also to the audience, who can ask questions. Afterwards, there will also be back and forth on the mini table tennis table on site. If you like: bring your table tennis racket!

The event series "IMMER WEITER Schreiben und Veröffentlichen" is intended to give authors visibility, even while writing novels and sitting alone in front of the computer, and could be an inspiration for writers and an illustration for those interested in culture of what is currently being created in Munich in terms of literature, what has already been created, what has become of it and what industry laws and literary perspectives are behind it.
