A fresh, cheeky, radical, experimental chamber music sound experience in the context of new music + jazz, improvisation + spontaneous composition presented by international experts of the genre as the start and premiere of the new improvisation music series at Giesinger Bahnhof.

  • Udo Schindler bass & double bass clarinets
  • Ove Volquartz bass & double bass clarinets
  • Erhard Hirt electric guitar & live electronics

Three top artists from the international improvisational music scene create individual peripheral unheard sound creations of the highest class. They will present experimental improvised music on the spot, as instant composing.

Decades of experience with different collaborations form the individual sounds of the protagonists, which are amalgamated into a special sound experience.

The 3 protagonists embark on an unpredictable sound excursion of improvised music, amalgamating elements of avant-garde jazz with experimental sounds of new music. The formation of ephemeral, extreme, non-genre and cliché-free sound adventures, always operating along the edge of risk, can be heard live. For a long time, they have been exploring the extended techniques of their instruments into the regions of noise, noise, multiphonics and microtonality, which, in the case of Udo Schindler as a multi-instrumentalist, have led to 'readable' international recognition from the international music press.

Udo Schindler has been an authority on improvised music since the end of the 1970s, cooperating with the most prominent European musicians on the scene, such as Paul Lytton, Phil Minton, John Butcher, Paul Lovens, Lol Coxhill, Axel Dörner, Keith Rowe and others, playing at festivals worldwide and releasing many recordings on renowned labels. He has played as a duo with both musicians. Intensive duo projects with the unusual instrumentation of bass and double bass clarinet. The duo recordings have received top reviews from renowned music critics worldwide.

Press reviews

... And in "Tales about Exploding Trees and other Absurdities", too, the tonal variety of the interplay between two bass clarinets is extremely stimulating. In this production [by Udo Schindler] with Ove Volquartz, a clear common tonal language can be heard. Complementary, the two protagonists oscillate between linear explorations, multiphonic abstraction and shimmering sheets of sound. It is not surprising that this duo already has a somewhat longer history. They create the arcs together and the sound mix is convincing.

The more I listen to his music, the more I am convinced that Udo Schindler is one of the un(der)sung master wind players, both in the strange streams of sound that he elicits from his horns and in the concerted way in which he avoids conventional grammar. It is as if he is developing a new vernacular for his instrument in real time.

Schindler's unique style comes into its own particularly well in duos and, it seems, live performances. He used the pandemic to dig through his old catalog of recordings. Many of these were only made available to the public as downloads on his Bandcamp page, and most notably, many of them were duets. Schindler does seem to be drawn to the duo, probably for practical reasons, but also because of the possibilities of this constellation. It offers each musician a large space to be heard - with full force or sotto voce - and gives everyone a counterpart - sometimes an accompanist and sometimes a sparring partner - with whom they can exchange ideas and to whom they can react. Depending on the instrumentation and players, it also frees the musicians from the centripetal force of rhythm and gives them the freedom to explore other - in this case amelodic and atonal - places.
