In the pages of time - I like living so much
18 students from the Alice Salomon Hochschule (ASH) spent two semesters artistically exploring this question. They based their work on young Gerda's detailed diaries from 1929 to 1948 as well as countless photos and other research and archive materials. In the diaries, Gerda M. Meyer recorded her participation in cultural life in Berlin as well as daily political events and the persecution of her Jewish family during the Holocaust.
The project was initiated by her great-great-niece Ulrike Cordier, who digitized the diaries and accompanied the students during the seminar. Under the guidance of the directing duo Professor Johanna Kaiser and filmmaker Johanna Pohland, the students developed performative reinterpretations. The entire work process was historically verified by the cooperation partner Historikerlabor e.V. Scenes were created at original locations from Gerda M. Meyer's life in Berlin-Steglitz and in the seminar at ASH, which represent a connection between the students' reflections today and the life of Gerda M. Meyer in Berlin at the time of the Holocaust. The result is "In den Seiten der Zeit - Ich leb' so gern", a unique film which, through the artistic and scenic work of young people, offers both a highly topical approach to remembrance work and, in the context of educational work, makes a lasting contribution to the topic of universally applicable human rights.
The film presentations will be followed by an open discussion event to allow the audience to actively participate. Particularly in the current political environment, it is essential to address the history and impact of the Holocaust.
Holocaust is indispensable, not only to prevent anti-Semitism within society, but also to create prospects for reconciliation.
The work was supported as a seminar by the Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences Berlin, where Prof. Johanna Kaiser is appointed to the field of social cultural work with a focus on theater. Johanna Pohland was engaged as part of a teaching assignment.
Historikerlabor e.V. acted as the project's sponsor and provided support in applying for and managing funding.
Financial support was provided by the Friede Springer Foundation, the Federal Office for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth - Federal Program Demokratie leben and the company MicroDissect GmbH, Dr. Dorina Böhm.
