Chicago in the 1930s: When conman Johnny Hooker rips off gangster boss Lonnegan's moneyman, the latter murders Johnny's accomplice. Johnny teams up with the crook Henry Gondorff to take revenge on Lonnegan. They build up an enormous racket around horse betting, and a sophisticated and amusing double and triple game of fraud and counter-fraud begins.
Robert Redford and Paul Newman had already enjoyed great success for director Hill in 1969 as BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID. In the gangster comedy THE CLOU, they play two small-time crooks who take on the mafia and corrupt police: Fast-paced direction, perfect sets, actors in top form and, last but not least, Scott Joplin's ragtime music ensured seven Oscars and huge audience numbers.
