"In the Mood" - Die Amerikaner und die "Stunde Null" in der Musik- und Stadtkultur

On May 23, 2025, the Munich Adult Education Center's East Department and the Munich City Library Bogenhausen invite you to a moderated concert in the hall of the Kunstforum Arabellapark at Rosenkavalierplatz 16.

Since the American invasion of Munich at the end of April/beginning of May 1945, the Americans have had a decisive influence on cultural development, urban identity and the development of popular music. What had already inspired many in the Weimar Republic and was ostracized as "un-German" under National Socialism was now enthusiastically taken up again and incorporated into the city's own pop production: Swing, boogie, the emerging rock 'n' roll and more.

Music from the "early years" is presented, as well as the history of its creation and impact. You can look forward to the music of Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, George Gershwin, Bill Haley, Hugo Strasser, Max Greger and others, performed live in the big band sound of Mike's Music Train, presented and commented on by Robert Richter, songwriter, blues guitarist and music history connoisseur. Examples of literature by Victor Klemperer, Klaus and Thomas Mann, Wolfgang Koeppen, Walter Kolbenhoff, Erich Kästner and others will convey a picture of the time in the city, presented by Winfried Eckardt, the long-time MVHS district manager in the east of Munich.

The event accompanies the exhibition "Stunde Null in Bogenhausen" by the NordOstKultur e.V. association (on display until June 27, 2025) and is part of the project "Stunde Null - wie wir wurden, was wir sind" by the Cultural Department of the City of Munich.
