Insects and books have an ambivalent relationship. While magnificently illustrated insect books are among a library’s most prized treasures, feeding tunnels in the books reveal that silverfish and beetles are also interested in historical literature.
The exhibition at the University Library of Leipzig offers fascinating insights into the history of entomology and showcases its valuable collection of historical entomological books. The focus is on entomological literature from the 18th century. At that time, interest in insects skyrocketed; collecting beetles and butterflies became a veritable trend. The fledgling field of entomology experienced a massive boom, driven primarily by the dissemination of “insect knowledge” through books.
In addition to the insect books, models and specimens from the University of Leipzig’s Zoological Collection will be on display. In addition to questions regarding the depiction and classification of insects, the exhibition also addresses the handling of unwanted insects in the library. And in keeping with the theme, the exhibition itself will undergo a metamorphosis and change its appearance over the course of the summer.
