Vernissage / Der Leipziger Machsor: jüdisches Kulturerbe als Verpflichtung

To kick off our “EinBlick” exhibition on the magnificent Leipzig Machzor manuscript: an evening of conversation about Jewish cultural heritage of the highest order, the convoluted history of its ownership, and the responsibilities that arise from it today.

Featuring Prof. Jörg Deventer, Deputy Director of the Leibniz Institute for Jewish History and Culture – Simon Dubnow, and Dr. Christoph Mackert, Director of the Manuscript Center at the University Library of Leipzig. As part of “Tacheles: Year of Jewish Culture in Saxony 2026.”

THE EXHIBITION

September 11 through October 25, 2026, at the Bibliotheca Albertina; Mon.–Wed.: 10 a.m.–6 p.m., Thu.–Sun.: 10 a.m.–9 p.m.

The Leipzig Machzor is one of the most famous Hebrew manuscripts to have survived from the Middle Ages. It contains the prayers and hymns for Jewish holidays and is richly adorned with exquisite illumination. For conservation reasons, this monumental manuscript from the early 14th century is usually kept under lock and key in the vault of the Leipzig University Library. Now, for the first time in 17 years, there is once again an opportunity to view the Leipzig Machzor.
