In the organizer's words:

To mark the 275th anniversary of his birth, the Landesmuseum is dedicating a major retrospective to Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein (1751–1829), widely known as “Goethe-Tischbein.”

Just how multifaceted Tischbein’s oeuvre is—beyond his now-famous portrait of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in the Roman Campagna—has largely been forgotten. Yet it is precisely his versatility that makes Tischbein so fascinating. He is a true master of the anecdotal, of weaving stories with brush and pen—not only between image and word, but also between a passion for antiquity, idylls, and depictions of animals; between Classicism and Romanticism; and between Italy and Germany. His unique body of work springs from this tension.

He can be considered the most internationally renowned scion of the Hessian artistic dynasty of the Tischbeins—with an impressive career as a drawing instructor and Goethe’s tour guide in Rome, as director of the Academy in Naples, and finally as court painter to Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig of Oldenburg.

Organized into various themed rooms, the exhibition not only presents Tischbein’s paintings but also focuses primarily on his diverse drawings and watercolors, imaginatively combined works combining images and text, and autographs from the artist’s extensive estate. In addition to highlights from the collection and works on paper being shown for the first time, the exhibition will also feature loans from other museums. Objects from 20th- and 21st-century art, as well as popular culture, shed light on the “Goethe-Tischbein” myth in a critical and humorous way, navigating the spectrum between art, kitsch, and commerce.
