JAZZ IN DEN GÄNGEN: Saliou Cissokho und Showcase Vimbs Mavimbs Quartett – Sound als Erinnerung, Heilung und Vision

Saliou Cissokho

Saliou Cissokho was born into a griot family in Senegal, where the playing of the kora is traditionally passed on from father to son. Griots in West Africa are guardians of history and culture - they nourish the soul and connect people through music.

Saliou is both a kora builder and a kora player. Building and playing this West African harp requires a deep and disciplined engagement with the musical traditions of the region. The sound of the kora fills the room and body with fine, soulful, almost meditative vibrations. It is said that it is not the person who finds the kora - the kora decides who finds it.

Although Saliou studied at university in Dakar and initially devoted himself to modern science, his path led him back to the centuries-old tradition of his family. As a griot, he carries on the mission of his ancestors: to keep myths, satire and poetry alive.

Saliou moves between traditional music and world music. He has lived in Hamburg since 2012 and is active in various musical projects.

Showcase: Vimbs Mavimbs Quartet

The musical path of Vimbs Mavimbs, who describes himself as a "late bloomer", is not at all dissimilar to that of Saliou. Although he only discovered his vocation at the age of 18, he did not choose his instrument. Rather, he says: "It chose me. It allows me to speak a language that I didn't even know I needed."

Thembinkosi Mavimbela, known by his stage name Vimbs Mavimbs, is a double bass player, composer and bandleader. He is currently studying for a master's degree in jazz at the Hamburg University of Music and Drama. His project "Late Bloomer", which he will be presenting this evening, celebrates life and the rich African heritage. It stands for a contemporary sound that is fed by traditional jazz approaches, but deliberately does not allow itself to be limited by them.

The album of the same name is dedicated to the idea of "late awakening", honoring humble beginnings and the process of transformation. Inspired by the metaphor of the butterfly, it tells of hope and change. It is an ode to all late bloomers.
