Queen Goes Jazz
QUEEN Goes Jazz
Adventurous? Absolutely. A little crazy? Definitely.
When Elisabeth Lohninger takes the stage, one thing becomes clear: this isn’t run-of-the-mill jazz. Hailed by the press as the “Kate Bush of jazz,” she shies away from neither stylistic tightrope walks nor musical taboos. Her velvety, dark alto voice serves as the vocal counterpart to the iconic Freddie Mercury—and that’s precisely where the appeal lies: where he explodes theatrically, she remains soulful and subtle. And suddenly, even the most familiar Queen lyrics sound like something you’ve never heard before.
Together with her kindred spirit, pianist Walter Fischbacher, Lohninger has created a program that turns Queen classics inside out: from anthemic evergreens like “We Are the Champions” to nearly forgotten gems like “Cool Cat.” Everything has been reimagined, stripped down to the essentials, and tailored to her voice and expression. What remains is nothing less than a musical arc spanning intimacy and euphoria.
Lohninger, a New Yorker by choice for several decades, lives in the creative tension between the Big Apple and an Alpine idyll. Her true home? Where opposites collide. Where sonic spaces emerge between what was and what could be. With *Queen Goes Jazz*, she has succeeded in building a stylistic bridge that defies categorization. And that is precisely what makes it so irresistible.

Elisabeth Lohninger
As an Austrian who has called New York home for many years and tours extensively around the world, Elisabeth Lohninger sees herself as a citizen of the world. And with fifteen albums to her credit, she has built a body of work through which—despite an enormous stylistic range—a powerful common thread runs: the pursuit of authenticity, of being human in all its facets.
With her latest album, “Queen Goes Jazz” (Lofish Music 2025), she takes on the music of the band Queen. “The album surprises, delights, and sweeps you away,” writes the press.
Over the years, Lohninger has performed with jazz greats such as Donny McCaslin, Ingrid Jensen, Bruce Barth, Minu Cinelu, and Christian Howes; written award-winning film scores; and appeared as a guest at international jazz festivals. From 2002 to 2024, she taught voice and ear training at the renowned New School for Jazz in New York City. Then came her return to Europe.
Since 2025, Elisabeth has been teaching pop and jazz vocals at the Institute for Music and Media at the Robert Schumann University of Music in Düsseldorf.

Walter Fischbacher
The Austro-American pianist Walter Fischbacher is a multifaceted artist. For years, he has traveled the world as a bandleader, sideman, and duo partner. With his 2023 CD, *Phishbacher Plays The Beatles*, he pays tribute to the music of the Fab Four. A New Yorker by choice from 1994 to 2024, he has performed with jazz greats such as Ravi Coltrane, Randy Brecker, George Garzone, and Ingrid Jensen. This was followed by years of touring with his trio, Phishbacher, and several CDs as a bandleader.
As a musical director, pianist, and sound engineer, he toured Europe for several years with American jazz singers. His solo program is often described as: “Simple melodies embedded in virtuoso piano playing, a collage of musical styles ranging from classical to jazz to funk” (press release). His latest CD, “Invisible Touch: The Music of Collins, Gabriel & Genesis,” is set to be released in 2027.
