Günter Baby Sommer & Ulrich Gumpert

Once figureheads of GDR free jazz, today experienced improvisers with unbroken curiosity: Günter Baby Sommer and Ulrich Gumpert have been shaping the scene since the 1970s. Their concerts sound like life lived and go far beyond categories such as "free" or "traditional": blues, boogie-woogie, hard bop, folk song arrangements, free improvisation - everything is present. Sommer thinks drums melodically and creates his sound cosmos with brushes, gongs and cymbals, while Gumpert responds with seriousness, wit and imagination. "Two warhorses with spiky hair and lots of laugh lines" (BR-Klassik) - and a little piece of jazz history, live on stage.

Theresia Philipp & Sebastian Scobel

It's a small premiere: After 18 years of musical history together, Theresia Philipp and Sebastian Scobel are performing as a duo for the first time. Both come from Dresden, are close friends - and break through genre boundaries in their own way. Theresia Philipp, saxophonist with a hauntingly personal sound and recently became the first female director of the Bundesjazzorchester, stands for music with attitude: aesthetic, social, political. Her works reflect feminist themes and the ongoing cultural fusion of East and West Germany. Sebastian Scobel, pianist of the hr-Bigband among others, is her ideal partner with his playfulness and harmonic ingenuity. A happy coincidence and a hopeful prelude to many more duo encounters.
