JEMBAA GROOVE - Ghana's Highlife with the heartbeat of 70's Soul and Jazz Music
The Berlin-based Afro-Soul group was founded in late 2020 by Yannick Nolting (bass, producer) and Eric Owusu (vocals, percussion). After searching for the right companions for their upcoming journey and meeting some of Berlin's best musicians, they eventually formed Jembaa Groove, a 7-piece band that combines jazzy sounds from Berlin's emerging underground scene with traditional West African sounds from Ghana like Highlife and Adowa. Since their debut album Susuma, Jembaa Groove's hybrid sound of West African and U.S. soul and jazz has created a storm of buzz and has been supported by media outlets such as KEXP, BBC6 Music, KCRW, Worldwide FM, FIP, RFI, Rinse FM, WDR Cosmo and numerous stations around the world. They met by chance in a Berlin playground with their two sons and soon realized they were onto something special. Jembaa Groove's music is influenced as much by soulful rhythms and artists like Lee Fields and Ikebe Shakedown as it is by highlife artists like Ebo Taylor and Pat Thomas, with whom Eric has toured and recorded for many years. In the summer of 2022 they played some of the best stages in Europe, such as Fusion or Xjazz Festival, and in October 2022 they played a stunning UK tour after being invited by Cerys Matthews for a live session at BBC6 Music Studios in Maida Vale. Jembaa Groove will be part of the official selection of SXSW 2023 in Austin/USA and ESNS 2023 in Groningen/NL. New music is already in the making and the next releases are already planned.
