Johanna Senfter (1879-1961) - Komponistin im Portrait

In the organizer's words:

Compositions by Johanna Senfter

performed by pupils and students of the Dr. Hoch's Conservatory

Johanna Senfter (1879-1961) grew up in a very wealthy family and therefore had the privilege of devoting herself entirely to music. She first studied at Dr. Hoch's Conservatory and then with Max Reger, who described her as his best pupil. She composed works for almost all genres and instrumentations in her late romantic style. Unfortunately, due to her reserved personality and the challenges she faced as a woman of her time, many of her works have only survived in manuscript form and have never been published. The student project "Women of Music" provides a new stage for her works, which are rarely or never performed.

Women of music - portraits of female composers

The student concert series, initiated in 2019 by Miriam Dietenberger, Sonja Ehrhardt and Marisa Algari at Dr. Hoch's Conservatory, aims to give more attention to works by female composers. So far, seven concerts on the women composers Ethel Smyth (2019), Grazyna Bacewicz, Lili and Nadia Boulanger (2020), Amy Beach (2021), Emilie Mayer (2022), Ilse Weber (2023), Fanny Hensel (2024) and Cécile Chaminade (2015) have presented their lives and works in a historical context. Since 2021, the concert series has been continued by Miriam Dietenberger. Since 2024, Felicitas Baumann has taken over the organization of the concert series and since 2025 the series has been continued by Felicitas Baumann and Tabea Blum. Many thanks go to the lecturer Gabriele Zimmermann and the lecturer Klaus Dreier, who support the concert series to a great extent.
