JUNGMANN: 1800 mm, 75 kg meat, top speed 20 km/h, two legs, two untrained arms, flexibility and stretchability.
JUNGKLAUS: 2500 mm, 3000 kg steel, top speed 17 km/h, four wheels, powerful lifting hydraulics, stability and maneuverability.
These two different bodies of man and forklift meet in a mechanical pas de deux. JUNGMANN//JUNGKLAUS deals with Jungmann's discriminatory work experiences as a queer person in a logistics center. The interior cabin serves as a safe space until the hard JUNGKLAUS forks become soft and tenderly lift JUNGMANN from the queer-hostile floor. A continuous process of transformation until blood and oil flow into each other and the intimacy between vulnerable flesh and invulnerable steel challenges our stacked binary ways of thinking.
Not only are the conventions of what is considered "masculine" restacked as soon as we talk about heavy physical labor with machines. But also the heteronormative standards of couple dance, which takes place in a dual division into men and women in ballet, for example.
JUNGMANN//JUNGKLAUS rethinks the (emotional) connection between man and machine and speculates on how we can 'emasculate' technical objects in order to ultimately 'queer' (capitalist and patriarchal) systems .
Jungmann & Riebesam - the collective around Thaddäus Maria Jungmann & Daniela Riebesam - explore the tension between man and object in the context of new materialism in their pieces. Since their production THE M-PET as part of WestOFF, in which they examine the ugliness of 50 kg of glitter confetti, integrated audio description has been part of their artistic practice. Their work combines minimalist conceptual art with movement characterized by subtle humour and tender provocation.
