Three mummified corpses are discovered in a secret room of an apartment, draped around a table as if for dinner; one chair is still free. Carl Mørck and Assad's Special Squad Q investigate - will there be another victim? The clues lead to the small Danish island of Sprogø, where in the 1960s there was an institution for the "education" of women - anyone who was considered stupid, immoral or non-conformist was sent there. For example, the young Nete, whose relationship did not suit her father and who had to suffer humiliation, rape and forced sterilization there. The doctor at the time is now the head of a radical social Darwinist nationalist group...

The film adaptation of Jussi Adler-Olsen's novel of the same name deals with a real Danish scandal in the guise of a suspenseful thriller: between 1934 and 1967, over 11,000 women were forcibly sterilized in so-called "orphanages".
