Proportions of the missing: Performance with Ja Jess
The K21 Encounters series of events is dedicated to current questions about the significance of contemporary art for the future of our society. The focus is on analog, joint discussions on site. Artists and theorists present their latest works in talks, screenings, concerts, readings and performances, followed by open discussions.
The performance "proportions of the missing" by Ja Jess examines how social rituals are inscribed in the body and landscape. Ja Jess has developed her own practice: "social drag". Over many years, Ja Jess has developed various roles that he actually lives. For example, there is Fetus, an employee at an archaeological site who unearths layers of time in Düsseldorf; and Jane Doe, a cadaver dissector who works in funeral parlors in New York and Münster. Ja Jess also takes on both roles for Encounters. In reference to the historical architecture of K21 as the former state parliament, the performance traces routes of so-called "walking horizons" across the museum's piazza and creates a picture of buried paths and fleeting existences. In a slowly unfolding choreography of walking and voices, "proportions of the missing" reveals both the caring and destructive dimensions of historiography.
Ja Jess lives and works in Düsseldorf.
The performance "proportions of the missing" is a collaboration with the artists and performers Leonie Türke and Rebecca de Toro.
Afterwards, you are cordially invited to join the artists for a drink and conversation.
