The international contemporary art of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen is housed in K21, the former Ständehaus on Düsseldorf's Kaiserteich. While changing exhibitions can be seen in the basement and on the Bel Etage, the rooms around the arcades on the 2nd and 3rd floors house the collection of contemporary art from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Photographs by Thomas Struth, sculptures by Thomas Schütte and video works by Robert Wilson, among others, have long been part of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen's holdings. The installation "Das Deutschlandgerät" by Reinhard Mucha, which has filled the plenary hall of the Ständehaus since the museum was founded in 2002, is also exhibited here. As the powerhouse of the museum, it shows how contemporary artists and museums are constantly redefining their historical position.
There are numerous new acquisitions to discover in the constantly changing collection presentation on the 2nd and 3rd floors. Many of these are contemporary artworks from the most recent temporary exhibitions, including works by Cao Fei, Isa Genzken, Isaac Julien, Marcel Odenbach, Raqs Media Collective, Hito Steyerl and Ai Weiwei. Analog and digital photography is another focus of the presentation with works by Candida Höfer, Zanele Muholi, Bunny Rogers, Dayanita Singh, Akram Zaatari, Tobias Zielony and others. The new acquisitions also include paintings by Tamina Amadyar, Anna Boghiguian, Paul Czerlitzki, Florian Krewer and Nicholas Grafia. As the most recent acquisitions to the collection, they illustrate the topicality of painting that understands itself politically and formally aesthetically. The profound video work "Tide Table" (2002) by the artist William Kentridge is exhibited on the 3rd floor.
