Kanze Nō-Theater Ensemble Tokio

As part of its European tour in 2026, the ensemble of the Kanze Nō Theater from Tokyo will be a guest at musica viva of Bayerischer Rundfunk in the Prinzregententheater. With Kiyokazu Kanze, XXVI Grand Master of the Kanze School - descendant of the two Nō Theater founders Kan'ami and Zeami in the 14th century and head of the largest Nō Theater in the world. As the leading actor, the renowned ensemble presents three works of classical Nō theater: Hagomoro, one of the most famous Nō theater plays with clear parallels to the European legend of the 'Swan Maiden'; Kaki Yamabushi, one of the most popular Kyōgen comedies; and finally the famous festive Nō play Shakkyō with the spectacular lion dance.

The Japanese art of Nō theater, which was perfected 700 years ago, has been passed down almost unchanged to the present day, making it one of the oldest stage arts in the world. As a musico-dramatic art form, it combines song, dance and instrumental music. In poetic narratives in which reality and dreams, the living and spirits meet, the actors unfold the events with Nō masks and elegantly stylized movements. His unique aesthetics and spirituality have also had a lasting influence on Western art. In 2008, Nō was added to the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage.
