The mother of all indie parties is back in Dresden!

Who would have thought it decades ago on that Friday in May 1996? A small party at Huxleys Jr. in Berlin’s Neukölln neighborhood, complete with a Carrera racetrack, marked the birth of Karrera Klub, which has since grown into an event agency. One of the first bands to play here was a group called “Stiller”; later, “Sportfreunde” joined them, and the rest is history. Many bands that have since become major acts made their Berlin debuts at Karrera: Franz Ferdinand, The Kills, and The Killers at the Roter Salon; Kettcar at the Bastard; La Roux at the Lovelite; Tomte at the old Privatclub; Bilderbuch, MGMT, Johnossi, and Of Monsters and Men at the Lido; Arctic Monkeys and The Wombats at the Mudd Club; Arcade Fire, The Libertines, The XX, LCD Soundsystem, Shout Out Louds, Maxïmo Park, and Mando Diao at the old Magnet; Editors and Kaiser Chiefs at the Postbahnhof; Kings of Leon and Modest Mouse at the Columbiaclub; Blond at the Badehaus, Mumford & Sons and Two Door Cinema Club at Rosis, and even Adele made her Berlin debut there as the opening act at a party. The list seems endless, and the Karrera Klub has even hosted legends like Oscar winner Glen Hansard, the Beatsteaks at the far-too-small Magnet, Paul Weller at the Schillertheater, Henry Rollins at the Passionskirche, and even Burt Bacharach at the Admiralspalast!
But the Karrera Klub wasn’t just a force to be reckoned with at home. It racked up points on the road as well, with festival appearances at Tempelhof Sounds 2022, Primavera Sound in Barcelona, Rock am Ring, Melt!Festival, Immergut, Berlin Festival, Jenseits von Millionen, and at the Malzfabrik. Even in cities like Hamburg, Munich, Vienna, Frankfurt am Main, Stuttgart, Dresden, Bochum, and Leipzig, their records were—and in some cases still are—played regularly to this day.

The wild journey through the history of independent music—from back then to today—continues! This is the music from a time when people didn’t wear ski goggles on stage, didn’t sing about sitting barefoot at the piano, and didn’t distort their voices with Auto-Tune. Parties took place in clubs and weren’t “Ballermann”-style events in huge halls. Karrera Klub serves up that vibe and the sound of back then with a timeless mix of punk and post-punk, refined with a dash of pop and wave, indie pop, and maybe a touch of grunge. The whole thing is rounded out with ’90s Britpop and the indie revival of the 2000s. That’s right—a genre-spanning mix. Of course, it’s guaranteed to get you dancing and singing along.
