Interview: Claudia Dathe
He is a literary mediator between cultures and a stage event: the Congolese-Austrian writer Fiston Mwanza Mujila. He was internationally acclaimed for his debut "Tram 83" and received the Prix Les Afriques for "Tanz der Teufel" (both titles published by Zsolnay // in German by Katharina Meyer, Lena Müller). This year he was awarded the Prize of the Houses of Literature - for his novels and poems ("Kasala für meinen Kaku" // Ritter Literatur Verlag), and for his performances: Fiston lives his texts, he screams and shouts, laments, whispers or sings his "Kasalas" - his invocations, incantations and hymns.
In conversation with translator Claudia Dathe, who was awarded the Special Prize of the Houses of Literature 2024 for her commitment to communicating Ukrainian culture and literature, Fiston Mwanza Mujila talks about the importance of the written and spoken word across national and linguistic borders.
