Kathrin Henschler: Der Mensch ist ein unmöglicher Traum
In the organizer's words:
The depiction of the human figure in painting is essentially a story of how humans understand themselves—religiously, philosophically, and socially. In Kathrin Henschler’s works, the human figure is not shown as a mere representation, but as a noble idea, a constructed concept, and a cultural reflection. Iconography is reflected upon and made into a subject in its own right. What does a face mean? What does a gesture signify? What remains? What endures? In these paintings, this timelessness of being encounters references from classical art history and philosophy, as well as figures from mythology. In keeping with this multi-layered conceptual approach, Henschler deviates from conventional oil painting techniques in her execution, presenting reverse-glass painting, layered painting, and sculpture. This formal approach thus reinforces the expression of her themes.
Kathrin Henschler, born in Naumburg, studied painting at Burg Giebichenstein in Halle (Saale), at the HGB in Leipzig, and at Camberwell College of Arts in London. She lives and works in Leipzig and Naumburg.
