When people in Germany talk about people applying for asylum, they often refer to "illegally entering refugees". Many people primarily have young men in mind. But neither is true. In 2025, 80% of initial applications were from women or children under the age of 16. For many of these applicants, the initial application is simply rejected and later decided in favor by the courts.
In 2024, the Common European Asylum System (CEAS) was adopted, which is due to finally come into force in June 2026 and must be transposed into national law by parliaments by then. Asylum seekers are to be distributed evenly across European countries and application and deportation procedures are to be carried out directly at the borders according to uniform rules. To this end, asylum seekers (including children) can be held in detention-like conditions for 12 weeks, or 24 weeks if their application is rejected.
Studies show: The inadequate reception system hinders integration and violates children's rights under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Speaker Hasiba Bayan from "Terres des Hommes" will explain the new legislation and highlight the perspectives of children and young people. The lecture will be supplemented by reports from Bremerhaven members of the "Migration and Refugees Working Group". After the lecture, visitors are invited to ask questions and talk to each other.
Venue: Leherheide District Library, Hans-Böckler-Str. 39
