Kinderzimmer Productions come from Ulm, a city that is not considered a classic hip-hop metropolis. Nevertheless, the sound that emerged from the cathedral city in the mid-nineties was previously unheard and unheard of, because it had never appeared in German hip-hop before: creaky old-school beats meet intellectual wordplay, a flow by Textor trained in US rap meets elaborate arrangements by Kinderzimmer beat-smith Quasi Modo.
The band name is inspired by the American group Boogie Down Productions, also a duo. Their frontman KRS-One is an audible point of reference for Textor like the rapper Busta Rhymes, who is namechecked on the Kinderzimmer album.
However, Textor's lyrics have a strong penchant for irony and their very own humor, which sets them apart from their US role models. Henrik von Holtum aka Textor is a qualified orchestral bassist - the double bass lends the nursery sound a very special touch. The album's hit, "Das Gegenteil von gut ist gut gemeint", begins with a driving double bass groove before syncopated jazz drums kick in. The hip-hop beat follows a few bars later and the song slowly gains momentum. In the lyrics, an imaginary advisor gives the band tips on how to build a successful live career. Appearance and the stage show are crucial. But Textor points out: "Hey man, unfortunately I'm second choice with the girls / Because my upper arm is too narrow for a real tattoo / And smiling is also stupid / Because I usually yawn when I smile / And only a phone booth / Is as yellow as my teeth!"
The humor is as dust-dry as the song's beat, which is underlaid with vinyl noise. But it's unique in German hip-hop in this self-deprecating form, and therefore utterly endearing.
After the self-titled debut from Kinderzimmer Productions, which had to be taken off the market due to an unlicensed sample from the Stranglers, "Im Auftrag ewiger Jugend und Glückseligkeit" is the duo's first official album. It developed into the indie sensation of 1996 because, like the music of the Beastie Boys, it was also heard and celebrated outside the hip-hop community.
In the end, the Kinderzimmer sound was a little too sophisticated and intellectual for the mass market, and Kinderzimmer Productions decided to disband in 2007 and devote themselves to other tasks. For example, Textor has been working as a lecturer for music and text at the Folkwang University in Essen for years. In 2020, Kinderzimmer Productions returned with their comeback album "Todesverachtung to Go" on Herbert Grönemeyer's "Grönland" label. And after several requests from Lieblingsplatte, they are finally back with their brilliant hip-hop milestone "Im Auftrag ewiger Jugend und Glückseligkeit"!
