There is currently much debate about the rights of children and young people. The political and social coping strategies used against the Corona pandemic demand the greatest sacrifice from the young and youngest generation. It is not uncommon for public debates to mark the best interests of children as the fundamental value of our civil society most damaged by the crisis. Recently, there was even a draft by the German government that wanted to anchor children's rights in the Basic Law in the future.
The title of Ian McEwan's novel could not be more topical. Family court judge Fiona Maye at the London High Court is also regularly confronted with legal disputes in which she has to rule on the conflicting interests of adults and their children. This is where the constitutional state's mandate to protect has to prove itself. Prudent judgments must be made despite differing values and notions of freedom, variable conceptions of human well-being and happiness, and an apparent gulf between cultures, identities, emotional states, lifestyles, family relationships, fundamental principles, religions, and opinions. At the height of her career and the nadir of her marriage, an emergency court order arrives at Fiona Maye's door: she is to decide whether she lives or dies. If seventeen-year-old Adam is not given a blood transfusion, he will die of leukemia within a few days. But as strict believers in Jehovah's Witnesses, he and his parents reject this life-saving measure outright. Their religion forbids them to put life above faith. Without further ado, Fiona decides to visit young Adam in person at the clinic, abandoning the usual path of her professionalism - a serious step that is to have fatal consequences.
