The FBI tries in vain to track down a serial killer known as "Buffalo Bill", who abducts and murders his female victims and then removes parts of their skin. In order to create a psychological profile of the killer, the young FBI trainee Clarice Starling visits the imprisoned psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a cannibalistic murderer, in the high-security wing. However, the highly intelligent doctor pursues his own interests during their conversations: In return for every piece of information, he demands intimate insights into the agent's past, who becomes increasingly entangled in his perfidious web of manipulation, power and psychological games.
