Gothic church ruins inspired both Romantic artists in the first half of the 19th century and, for example, Lyonel Feininger, who was inspired by the church ruins of Hoff to create abstract compositions. Adolf Hölzel captured the legend of St. Ursula as a church window-like painting with colorful forms. Käthe Kollwitz and Lovis Corinth also drew ideas from Christian art. Stephanie Ruhfaß M.A. shows the role of religious references in Central European art history.
