KOKOKO! *live

In the organizer's words:

New album from KOKOKO!

KOKOKO! is a project from Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo and one of the largest cities on the African continent. KOKOKO! create a powerful mix of experimental electronica, Congolese music styles, distorted and fast rhythms and intermittent synth sounds: a sonic image of the vibrant metropolis of Kinshasa. They themselves call their style "african alternative electronic post-punk" and that sums it up perfectly.

"BUTU" is a new album that goes in a more electronic direction. The album was created under different circumstances, as the pandemic was a turning point for KOKOKO! Originally, the band consisted of the charismatic singer Makara Bianko, dancers from the Lingwala district of Kinshasa, inventors of musical instruments from the Ngwaka district and the French producer Débruit. When the pandemic brought the world to a standstill and the group was separated, a new structure emerged. Bianko and Débruit remained as the core - but the other artists continued to work on the production.

"BUTU" means "The Night" and the record dives deep into the heart of a city whose noise level suddenly rises after the sun sets quickly: street vendors drum and shout for attention, commercials boom from megaphones, music emanates from clubs and churches. Field recordings of the nights and everyday noises chased through the distortion machine are important ingredients that combine to form a powerful whole thanks to the electronic production. The influences of the album are diverse and range from West and South Africa, Kuduro and Kwaito to new forms of alternative electronic music and punk.
