The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine is a balancing act for Europe. Europe was able to rely on the Biden administration when it came to supporting Ukraine militarily and at the same time controlling the risks of escalation. With Donald Trump, interests and strategies within the West are drifting apart. Washington is no longer clearly taking sides with the country under attack and is striving to end the war as quickly as possible. So far, Europe has neither succeeded in closing the resulting military gap nor in developing a coherent diplomatic strategy. The lecture summarizes the different phases of the conflict dynamics of the Ukraine war, with a special focus on escalation management and the latest diplomatic initiatives.
