In contrast to a random sequence of individual images, the series is characterized by an overarching context that connects the individual images. The series plays a central role in photography. It makes it easier for the photographer to depict his imaginary world and for the viewer to understand it. In this lecture, Rainer Zerback will classify different types of photographic series based on the characteristics of constancy and variation and illustrate them with examples from the history of photography and the current exhibition.
