The group Prosechòs was founded in 1984 to declare war on the "Zorbaization and Souvlakization" of Greek music. The long frowned upon Rembetiko, music from the Greek underground, which is described as a Greek form of blues, was the starting point at the time. Like Portuguese fado, Spanish flamenco or Argentinian tango, rembetiko originated in the urban centers and functioned as a musical way of coming to terms with everyday life and the past, overcoming hardships such as homelessness, persecution and being an outsider. These songs tell of the life of a subcultural minority in a very simple and direct way.
When almost 1.5 million Greek refugees from Asia Minor were forced to emigrate to the motherland in 1922, they brought the Cafe Aman music of Smyrna (now Izmir) with them as a legacy. This gave rise to Rembetiko in the Greek cities of Piraeus, Athens and Thessaloniki. Its elements experienced a hardly imagined renaissance at the beginning of the 1980s thanks to the film of the same name, and since then the Rembetiko as a song form has experienced its final rehabilitation as the authentic music of Greece.
