Every spring, a fascinating natural phenomenon occurs at the south pole of Mars: carbon dioxide geysers break through the seasonal CO₂ ice layer and hurl dark soil material onto the bright ice surface, which reforms during every Martian winter. This unique interplay of ice, gas, and dust has no direct counterpart on Earth.
In this lecture, we’ll take a closer look at the physical processes behind these eruptions and how they can be studied with the help of citizen science—supported by more than 100,000 volunteers worldwide. We’ll also examine the long-term changes these seasonal processes leave on the Martian surface, including the fascinating “geological spiders.” A lecture by Dr. Michael Aye, planetary scientist at the Free University of Berlin
