Polish artist Krzysztof Marchlak has been working with drag queens for years and explores the theatrical dimension of their practice in his photographs and video works: the joy of changing roles, of transformation, of becoming a different "self" for a moment. Identity does not appear here as a stable category, but as a field of play, experimentation and imagination.
"Becoming" is an exhibition for the Festival Center in cooperation with the Polish Institute Düsseldorf. In four photographic and video works, Marchlak shows the ongoing transformation of identity in relation to our bodies. The exhibition shows the performative potential of the body - its ability to change, stylize and consciously construct its appearance. Drag becomes visible as a space of freedom, expression and joy, but also as an instrument for reflecting on how identity is created between the public and the private, the visible and the intimate.
