Where otherwise laundry is done or tattoos are applied, cars are repaired, clothes, jewelry or baklava are sold, artists perform and create completely new worlds through drama, satire, music and dance. Once a year, stores, service providers and craft businesses in a district open their premises and present an entire evening of "culture in the store".
This cultural format, which is constantly reinventing itself, alternates between Altendorf and Frohnhausen every year and is a joint project between the Department of Culture and the Essen-based actress, singer and art manager Veronika Maruhn. It connects art with people's everyday lives, gives them direct access to cultural events and is equally accessible to everyone thanks to Free admission. Art and culture become food, available in stores for everyday needs.
Kultur im Laden impressively demonstrates the impact that direct cooperation between people in a particular district and artists can have: the appreciation for a district and its residents is made very clear, identification with the format is strong and the project becomes immensely relevant to the everyday lives of the district's residents. In addition, Kultur im Laden acts as an invitation to people from other districts and thus forms a lively bridge to the city.
