The exhibition "Becoming Corinth! The artist and art history" at the ZI does not shed light on Lovis Corinth's work itself, but on its art historical classification and public perception. In eleven chapters, it shows documents of reception - publications, exhibition catalogs, photographs, research tools such as the catalog raisonné - and makes the transformation and construction of the artist's image visible. The guided tour through the exhibition explores the question of how Lovis Corinth's image as an artist was actually created and what role exhibitions, retrospectives, catalogs of works, reproductions, academic publications and media mediation played in understanding his oeuvre.
